February 24 Webinar Report :.

Carol Woodbury: iSeries Security & Compliance

Key's February Webinar featured Carol Woodbury, co-founder of SkyView Partners. Woodbury addressed critical issues in i5/iSeries and AS/400 security and how they can affect compliance with new regulatory requirements. During this Web-based seminar, Woodbury and Jason Rubenstein of LifeCare Assurance Company discussed how to assess security and compliance risks and how to put proper controls in place to ensure a robust security environment that meets compliance regulations. Woodbury presented material on how to make the decision on whether to fix security and compliance exposures now, accept the risk, or plan for later remediation. Throughout, guidance on proactively preparing for compliance with HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, GBLA, SB-1386, Visa CISP and other regulations was emphasized.

March 22 Webinar Report :.

Server Consolidation on xSeries with Blades

Key's March Webinar featured Steve Wada, western region technical sales executive for blades at IBM. Wada discussed how to best accomplish server consolidation using IBM's xSeries servers with IBM blade servers. Key designed this Webinar to demystify blade server technology -- the latest stage in server evolution. Dramatic cost savings, saving critical data center space, boosting reliability and simplifying systems management can be achieved with IBM's blade server technology, called BladeCenters.

This Webinar was developed for those responsible for the management of server configurations, including CIOs, IT directors/managers, ops managers, and managers of Win/Tel environments.

You should review the archived version of this KEY Webinar if you have interest in the following:

  • How can consolidation of my Win/Tel servers benefit me?
  • How do blade servers enable server consolidation?
  • What are the major architecture components of blades?
  • What are the enhanced system management capabilities of blades?
  • What are the considerations for deployment of blades?
  • What are the cost-benefits of blades?

Field Report :.

How One Company Met Looming HIPAA Security Requirements

The Company
LifeCare Assurance Company is a third-party administrator for long-term healthcare insurance headquartered in Woodland Hills, CA. LifeCare (http://www.lifecareassurance.com) uses an iSeries server model 810 with three LPAR partitions supporting an NT network of 300 users. LifeCare has been a client of Key for four years.

The Problem
LifeCare had to satisfy a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulation on computer security that had a short deadline of April 2005.

The Approach
Jason Rubenstein, infrastructure database architect at LifeCare, decided to include as a goal the performance of a more thorough review of their computer security, and to do it in a less labor-intensive way. After evaluating the writing of the data collection programs needed within his group, Rubenstein decided to evaluate alternative software solutions available.

The Solution
LifeCare, working with Gary Singer and JR McCarter at Key, selected the Risk Assessor product after deciding it was the most comprehensive security audit solution available. Risk Assessor was developed by SkyView Partners of Issaquah, WA. Rubenstein reported, "We found Risk Assessor extremely easy to install and use. We run it monthly to check our adherence to HIPAA and other security standards."

The Results
Both the Risk Assessor's Assessment Guide and supplemental reports were found useful. The major benefit was the time saved to achieve a monthly in-depth assessment of LifeCare's OS400 security versus performing a manual examination and maintenance. The iSeries administrator found it an excellent tool for understanding the state of LifeCare's computer security. "An added benefit was pointing out areas about which we were previously unaware that could be vulnerable to accidental or deliberate intrusion," concludes Rubenstein.

Compliance for the iSeries :.

Carol Woodbury's Lessons on Compliance

With all the laws, regulations and standards facing businesses today, a key question becomes, What does this mean for my iSeries system under OS400? Carol Woodbury, former IBM chief security architect, iSeries security expert, and a founder of SkyView Partners, tackles compliance issues for iSeries users in a series of lessons on Compliance to appear in INsights. The first lesson is titled "What is Compliance" and can be accessed at the following link: carol woodbury's compliance series.

Look for additional lessons on compliance for iSeries users in future issues of this newsletter.

News at Key :.

Pete Elliot on What's Hot

Having just been the month that another seer warned Julius Caesar on his way to the Forum (Beware the Ides of March!), we decided to interview Pete Elliot on March 15th about his prophetic views of the IT industry.

INsights: What led you into our industry?
Elliot: IT was the second-fastest growing industry in the world, so I figured even an ex-comedy writer like me might land a job.

INsights: What's the fastest growing industry?
Elliot: Tourism/Recreation….not an industry known for its penchant for high payplans.

INsights: What's hot in IT these days?
Elliot: What's hot in the IBM world is server consolidation. Also, IBM's new OpenPower server, Linux, blade servers, high availability and fault tolerant solutions, and what I call the "compliance freight train."

INsights: Freight train?
Elliot: As Dan Rather would have said, "surer than a mother possum keeping track of her babies"….compliance will become the Y2K for 2005 and the train is just about to hit the station.

INsights: Tell me more….
Elliot: This is the year for federal regulations like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), Graham-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), HIPAA and about 99 other oversight regs. They have real jail-time teeth in them if the Feds catch you violating the new rules governing protection of critical information. As in 1999 with Y2K, awareness is coming slowly to corporate America. Yet compliance with the new rules is a full-blown business issue that can affect the financial health of your organization and the personal well-being of key execs. We'll be talking more about this throughout the year. I'm the compliance officer at Key and am happy to discuss these new laws with anyone interested.

INsights: Any last words of advice?
Elliot: OK … March wasn't a good month for Caesar. Don't let the new compliance laws be your downfall.
