From Pete's Desk :.

To our clients and friends,

2005 has seen compliance issues continue to gain significance within the IT community. However, one critical area that does not receive much attention is how compliance regulations affect nearline and archive storage policies. Specifically, SOX, HIPAA, SEC 17a-4, FDA Part 11 and DOD 5015.2 are the regulations of concern here.

This month, we have a dual venue for providing information about compliance with regulations that affect storage. Our learning events cover compliance rules for archiving and how the new IBM TotalStorage DR550 disk archive unit can play a positive role in compliance initiatives. Al Stuart, IBM’s Chief Strategist and Business Line Executive, is the main speaker for our June 7th KEY Webinar, and presides over our three workshops held at IBM office locations in Glendale, Costa Mesa and Cupertino, CA. The workshops are for you to roll up your sleeves and walk out of the session with a full understanding of why and how the DR550 could fit within your specific environment.

Our schedule of free Webinars and Workshops for the remainder of 2005 includes:

June 7Webinar - Storage Compliance and the IBM DR550
June 7: Workshop - Storage Compliance and the IBM DR550 in Glendale, CA
June 8: Workshop - Storage Compliance and the IBM DR550 in Costa Mesa, CA
June 9: Workshop - Storage Compliance and the IBM DR550 in Cupertino, CA
July 28: Webinar - Digital Media/Content Manager
September 15: Webinar - iSeries Security and SOX Compliance
October 20: Webinar - Grid Computing and Hosting

In July we will be at the OCEAN User Group’s Catch the Wave conference and expo in Irvine, CA. The conference is the largest iSeries conference held on the West Coast and is described at http://www.ocean400.org/TechConf.html.

April 21 Webinar Report :.

Jon Mechling: Fault Tolerance for Windows Applications

Key’s April Webinar featured Jon Mechling, Director of Product Marketing at Marathon Technologies in a Webinar titled Affordable Fault Tolerance for Windows Applications. During this Web-based seminar, participants learned how fault tolerance differs from high availability, the key fault and disaster tolerance issues for the Windows environment and which applications are candidates for fault tolerance. Mechling also covered how blade servers work with fault tolerant solutions and how to choose a fault-tolerant solution for Windows applications. Marathon is the leading provider of fault and disaster tolerance solutions for unmodified Windows servers and blades.

Mechling discussed achieving complete fault tolerance in the Windows environment for increased business continuity and elimination of the problems normally associated with failover. Mechling illustrated how Marathon FTvirtual Server fault-tolerant software is being used to protect mission-critical Windows applications from faults and failures.

Spotlight on Key Talent :.

Chris Parker, Tech Specialist Extraordinaire

We interviewed Chris Parker, who is in his third year at Key as a Technical Service Engineer working out of Key's Woodland Hills, CA, headquarters.

INsights: What are your areas of specialty?
Parker: I have mainly worked on storage and servers, with most of the focus on pSeries, OpenPower, tape backup and storage area networks.

INsights: What certifications do you hold?
Parker: IBM Open Storage, IBM High End Storage, Linux LPI Certification, IBM AIX CATE, PolyServe (Technical Sales), OnStor (San Filer) and IBM E-Business On Demand (Solutions Architect)

INsights: What kinds of assignments are you currently working on?
Parker: Right now I’m upgrading and implementing a SAN solution for a major food distributor in the western U.S. With our existing clients, I’m following up concerning their recent server and SAN deployments and centralized backup strategies. I’m also planning for Linux OpenPower training in San Mateo next month and studying for another IBM On Demand E-Business Certification.

INsights: In your area of specialty, backup/recovery and SANs, what tips or suggested best practices could you recommend?
Parker: Like Nike's commercial says ... "Just Do It!" It is easier to start a plan and modify it when it is in place than to try to start one from scratch. Most backup/recovery plans are included in disaster-recovery strategies, but most companies never even start thinking about it unless it becomes a really big problem. For example, when the server is down for a few days, employees are idle, production is nil and profits have slipped away like a young person's youth. My first thought of a best practice would be to just do it and modify the plan as your needs change. Don't be stagnant. Be flexible in your planning and strategy.

INsights: What crucial concepts do you think should be getting more attention?
Parker: Financial accountability, scalability, security and storage are key issues deserving more attention. These seem to be some of the areas of most concern for business today. With the recent news concerning terrorism and bad business practices, any of these four critical areas can seriously affect a company's bottom line.

IBM TotalStorage DS8100

Key has added the IBM TotalStorage DS8100 SAN storage unit to its IBM-authorized Business Partner Innovation Center located at the company’s headquarters in Woodland Hills, CA. IBM’s DS8100 storage series is the replacement for their popular ESS (SHARK) SANs. The DS8100 in the Center has 3 TB of fibre-attached disk storage for Key’s clients. The DS8100 is powered by dual two-way POWER5 processors, four host adapters, 64 15K RPM high-performance drives that can run RAID5 or 10.

Other hardware located at the Center includes an IBM TotalStorage DS4100 FAStT with 5TB of Serial ATA disks, Brocade Switch M12 (128-port Enterprise-class switch), IBM 3583 Tape Library with LTO drives and IBM Storage Virtualization Cluster for SAN solutions.

Key’s clients are able to use the Center for proof-of-concept testing and configuration analysis. A conference room with whiteboard, screen, and conference phone are conveniently located adjacent to the Center. Benchmarking software is available for measuring the impact on resources for a solution or configuration being tested.
