August 25 Webinar - Health-Check Your TSM

Presenters: Jason Turner, Product Manager for Tivoli Storage Manager at IBM; Chris Parker, TSM Health-Check Specialist at Key; and Jack Ryan, Product Manager at TSM Reports.com

Key's August 25th Webinar was titled Health-Check Your Tivoli Storage Manager. It was the most widely attended of all of the Webinars that Key has produced this year, demonstrating the intense interest in IBM's flagship backup/recovery software product. This Internet-based seminar featured Jason Turner, Product Manager for Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) at IBM. Co-presenting were Chris Parker, TSM Health-Check Specialist at Key and Jack Ryan, Product Manager at TSM Reports.com. Focus was on new developments in the Tivoli product for installed Tivoli users and those assessing the value of Tivoli for their installations. The Webinar also highlighted Key's new service for conducting a health-check of your installed TSM solution. Key topics included how to measure your Tivoli performance, what to watch out for that could render Tivoli less productive and planned product enhancements.

Topics included:

  • TSM near-term product enhancements
  • Benefits of optimizing your TSM environment
  • Critical information you need to gather to tune and optimize TSM
  • What to watch out for that could render your TSM less productive

Infrastructure demands driven by explosive data growth can unbalance any data protection strategy--so can adding new servers or storage, as well as a dynamic business environment. Moreover, new compliance regulations are causing changes to data retention policies that can affect storage management, hence the need for this Webinar.

Jason Turner of IBM
Jason Turner, IBM's Product Manager for Tivoli Storage Manager, shared an update on IBM's efforts to make TSM more user-friendly and expand its scope. The current version of Tivoli is TSM 5.3, which includes a new User Console. TSM 5.3 also has numerous features and functions that Jason reviewed in his extensive PowerPoint presentation. These enhancements include:

  • Enhanced calendar-based scheduling
  • Improved storage hierarchy of disk, tape and optical
  • Virtual tape
  • New database versions of TSM

Version 5.3.1 provides added support for a wide variety of new devices.

Version 5.3.2, due out later this year, will continue the improvements to the graphical interface and improve failover capabilities, journal-based backup on AIX, plus add new hardware platform support.

Turner reported on an announcement for Tivoli Data Protection for Files. A roadmap of TSM, showing the present and future versions of Tivoli with the new features added in each version was presented and is in the archived Webinar materials.

Turner predicted that next year there will be additional TSM focus from IBM on availability and robustness.

Chris Parker of Key
Chris Parker, TSM Health-Check Specialist with Key, specializing in data protection strategies, reported on Key's new TSM Health-Check Service announced during this Key Webinar.

What is a health-check and how does it apply to Tivoli Storage Manager? Parker reviewed some of the issues that he has seen at Key client sites using TSM. These include:

  • Having any type of problem with Tivoli Storage Manager
  • Running into scheduling conflicts with normal TSM operations
  • Tape library not adequate or suspect
  • Lack of a TSM disaster recovery plan
  • The need to define a backup strategy

He also reported that visits to TSM users indicate some are dealing with a variety of issues today. They often:

  • Don't know why backups are taking so long
  • Can't meet current service level agreements
  • Find that pending situations are affecting backups
  • Have concerns about compliance with new regulatory requirements, such as
    • HIPAA Regulations for the healthcare industry
    • Sarbanes - Oxley Act (SOX) regarding corporate governance
    • SEC 17a-4 for the financial industry
    • FDA Part 11 for the food, drug and medical industries
    • DoD 5015.2 for the defense industry

Parker described the TSM Health-Check Service now available from Key. The service has two major components:

  • Key's Information Systems Services Group, and
  • TSM Reports tool to collect data on existing TSM installations

The backup specialists in Key's Information Systems Services Group use the TSM Reports tool for evaluating existing Tivoli installations. The tool includes a data collection module to collect snapshots of how your TSM is functioning over a measured period of time. The results are gathered and analyzed by Key's Information Systems Services Group; the findings and recommendations are presented both in report form and orally to the client. Parker can be reached at cparker@keyinfo.com.

Jack Ryan of TSM Reports.com
Jack Ryan is Product Manager at TSM Reports.com, the organization that produces the TSM Reports tool. Ryan provided a detailed review of the Tivoli Reports tool used in Key's TSM Health-Check Service. He described how the tool works, the benefits that it provides to users and related products.

Details about the TSM Reports tool can be found in Key's archived copy of this Webinar.
