PROCESSOR; March 21, 2008
The ability to run operating systems and applications on virtual machines can create a conflict of resources in an IT environment. Definitions

Blade servers:
"Self-contained computer servers, designed for high density. Whereas a standard rack-mount server can exist with (at least) a power cord and network cable, blade servers have many components removed for space, power and other considerations while still having all the functional components to be considered a computer."

Virtualization:
"A broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. One useful definition: "A technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple logical resources, or it can include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single logical resource."

Other Definitions of Pertinent Terms

Virtualization Application is a field within computer science which deals with breaking the age old bond between physical hardware, operating system, and the program which runs on top of them. From the time the ENIAC first went into production in the mid nineteen forties, until the present day, software has been "installed" on the specific machine upon which it will execute.

Network Virtualization The ability to stream operating systems and applications on-demand from network storage enables key benefits.

Storage Virtualization: refers to the process of abstracting logical storage from physical storage. The term is today used to describe this abstraction at any layer in the storage software and hardware stack.

Server Virtualization Definition: Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server. VDI is a variation on the client/server computing model, sometimes referred to as server-based computing (SBC). The term was coined by VMware Inc. In the past few years, some large organizations have turned to VDI as an alternative to the server-based computing model used by Citrix and Microsoft Terminal Services.
